Eastern Parkway United Methodist Church

Caring for our community...

We have relationships with two mission focus agencies in our local community: Bethesda House, a daytime drop-in center and residency program for the homeles and Schenectady Inner City Ministries, a coalition of over 50 congregations who sponsor services like the Food Pantry and Damien Center.  We not only provide financial assistance to these organizations, members of our congregation serve there as well.  We also welcome representatives from those groups to share with us about what their ministries.

In addition to those local ministries, we partner with United Methodist mission workers in Mozambique. We also have individual groups in the congregation like Sunday School classes and youth groups who undertake one-time or short term outreach projects, and we participate in events like the local AIDS and CROP walks to raise money for those causes.  The Circle B group knits lap robes, baby blankets and prayer shawls.  And, all money from fundraisers like our chicken barbeque and rummage sale is given to outside organizations or causes.

Sock Sunday
The first Sunday of each month we receive donations of new socks and money for Bethesda House, a daytime drop-in center for those with nowhere to go.

SICM Food Sunday
The third Sunday of each month we receive donations of food and money for the Schenectady Inner City Ministries (SICM) food pantry.  We have several members of the congregation who volunteer at the food pantry on a weekly basis.

Damien Center Dinners
Eastern Parkway serves one dinner per month, offering both food and fellowship, at the Schenectady Damien Center, a facility providing support to those infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Mission Focus Agencies
We partner with two outside agencies, and provide both people-power and funding through special offerings and fundraisers.  They are Bethesda House ND Schenectady Inner City Ministries (SICM).  These agencies send personel to share with us twice annually about their ministries.  Fundraisers include an annual rummage sale, chicken barbeque, and alternative giving cards at Christmas.

Circle B
Circle B is a group of women interested in doing various craft and handiwork projects for the benefit of others.  They have, for example, knit lap robes for the Veteran's Hospital, hats and mittens for children, and prayer shawls for shut-ins and others, and sold quilts and crafts for the benefit of mission projects.  The group gathers in the Circle B room downstairs.

Persons in Mission
We provide support for Andrew Gladstone-Highland, a church and community worker who serves at the Syracuse Westside Urban Mission, and for Jeremiahs Franca at Chicuque Rural Hospital in Mozambique, both through the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.

Mission Opportunities
Our Missions Team sponsors participation in a number of ongoing and one-time events throughout the year, including:  CROP Walk; Home Furnishings Van; Free Summer Lunch Program; Volunteers in Mission Trips; AIDS Walk; Salvation Army Soup Kitchen; Habitat for Humanity; and, SICM Food Pantry.
